Who we are

We are Great Lakes Weim Rescue a 501 C 3 not for profit organization.

We take in Weims of all shapes, sizes, color, and ages.

Weims find their way to our organization in various ways. Most of our Weims come from shelters, others however are owner surrender or parts of accidental litters that cannot find homes. Another reason to have your pooch spayed or neutered, others are found as strays and can't find their way back home. Another reason to have your sweetie micro chipped. Sadly for others nobody comes to look for them.

Once a Weim comes into our rescue we evaluate them, treat them for whatever may ail them, vaccinate, spay/neuter, and microchip. We learn their goofy quirks, silly habits, and in some cases teach them manners. We also help them build their confidence, show them how to trust and encourage them overcome any fears they may have.

Since these gentle dogs cannot tell us about their previous life we figure out through their actions what it must have been like.

We currently need foster homes. We can only bring in as many dogs as we have open foster homes. Unfortunately their is a long list of dogs waiting to come in.

Being a foster home

Great Lakes Weim Rescue is looking for foster homes.

Being a foster parent is very rewarding!
Not only do you open your home the a Weim in need, you also get to be part of the Great Lakes Weim family! This is a very supportive family with a message board to help answer quetions, share funny stories, and help you every step of the way.

Most Weims come in afraid, alone, and in some cases abused. And sometimes the reason they end up at a shelter is unknown.

These sensitive souls need a place to rest their tired body, their sad hearts, and hungry stomachs.

When you start fostering you may wonder, "What did I get myself into?!?!" But once you see your foster dog walk through your door looking for your guidance, trust, and warm place to sleep you will be overcome by wanting to help your foster Weim. It is an amazing experience to watch how far they come from being unsure to leaving being confident dogs ready to take on the world!

In no time you'll think how can I not want to see that smiling face, cold nose on your arm, fur on your clothes, happy dog when I come home.

FAQ

Does GLWR take in only healthy dogs?

No, we do our best not to turn away any sick or injured dogs. We get them well before placing them in a fur-ever home.

What vetting does the rescue cover?

All dogs are spay/neutered, up to date on vax, wormed, treated for Heart worm if needed, treated for any other sickness, and microchipped.

I've never owned a Weim before can I still foster one?

Please read up on the breed, also check out our Weim, and read our medical blog. That will give you a lot of information on Weims. They are not like other breeds. If you would like to foster contact us (contact info at bottom of this page).

How long does the average dog stay in foster care before finding a home?

That is always a tricky question to answer, some are in and out in no time and other take a bit longer. A sick dog may take longer to place since they need some extra time to heal.

What if someone in another state wants to adopt my foster?

Transport can be arranged and many times adopters are willing to to help with getting their new dogs to them.

I have other dogs in my house, how will they react to my foster?

Make sure introductions are done properly so your dogs know this is a guest in their house. The general rule is it can take up to 30 days for everyone to adjust, however it is usually much shorter then that.

How can I not get attached and want to keep my foster?

We'd be lying if we said that doesn't happen. In your heart you'll know when its the perfect home for your foster. Just about everyone has that same question, once you foster and get that perfect application for your foster you will know the feeling. And their are always more homeless Weims waiting to come in. And who are we kidding! Once in a while some of us have kept a foster.

Do you require home visits?

Yes we do. Not only for foster homes, but adopters as well. We want to see where our Weims are going. We like to have a perfect match and sometimes a certain Weim may not fit in a home and their may be another Weim more suited for a home.

I really can't foster right now, is their any other way I can help?

Sure! We could always use donations whether monetary or other. Don't forget all donations are tax deductible.
